About Iris

People tell me that I have an excellent sense of direction. Regardless, my life tends to follow a convoluted path, constantly twisting and turning

I work as a veterinarian, but over the years I have jumped from profession to profession. My favorite work experiences include: 1) making deli customers huge sandwiches with giant slabs of brie cheese and 2) teaching college students the biology of reproduction – as both have led the consumer on the other end to moments of wide-eyed enlightenment.

I’ve lived in the city, deep in the woods, and on both sides of the Atlantic. I am at times obsessive and I often lack the ability to sit still. I like to wear black and listen to music one might consider “depressing”, but for some reason I am crazily attracted to bright colors and shiny objects. I am also an extremely happy (and sometimes annoyingly affectionate) wife, a helicopter dog-mom, and a pretty funky Auntie.

And ultimately, this blog grew from my inclination to enthusiastically and wholeheartedly devote any ounce of available free time to travel, writing, and photography. And, if I am being completely honest, I must add eating and drinking to the list (the truth is that my talent for imbibing is legendary).

The Very Hungry Entourage blog started as an experiment. While not my creation, the name came from very patient and good-humored friends who accompanied me on travels where together we fine-tuned our abilities to explore destinations near and far with an enormous appetite.

Writing and photography began appearing in my life more frequently after those experiences, thanks mostly to support from the very hungry entourage. Over time my hobbies changed and morphed into what I now consider a form of “amateur anthropology” – because for me, the seed for a story comes from careful and quiet observation. An everyday experience seen through the right lens can be novel. With luck, there is also an opportunity to connect the present moment to the past.

The view through that lens is the source of the essays and photographs included in this blog.

I consider daydreaming a necessity. I can never predict where it might take me. In fact, I have dreamt of becoming an artist, a writer, a chef, a musician, and even an athlete. Occasionally attempts at those endeavors led to some pretty embarrassing moments.

More often, however, I found myself at an unexpected destination.

  6. Iris, you write with a delightful sense of humor. I’ve only read a few of your posts, but they left me with a smile on my face, which can only improve on my preposterous red proboscis that resides above it. I stopped by to take a look at your blog and return the favor, as I noted you had joined some other poor misguided followers of the goings on in “My Attic.” I can only assume that the same Irish farmer who once gave you those poor directions back in Ireland, must have led you astray again. Which also leads me to wonder if any of my other followers turned right at that same rock? Nevertheless, I’m grateful to the rock (and your former employer who instructed you to turn right there) because it gave me the chance to come and explore your blog, too. ‘o)
